Description

This route is one of the 42 stages of the Jacob van Lennep experience tour. A tour inspired by the journey that Van Lennep made through the Netherlands with his fellow student Van Hogendorp in 1823. Click here for an overview of all stages.

Parting
Monday September 1st. The young men travel from Goeree-Overflakkee by boat (\\\"This was a Dutch ferry and everything was in order\\\", Van Hogendorp writes with relief) to Hellevoetsluis. Van Hogendorp likes this port town, after which Brielle looks more prosperous than he thought. They sail by boat to Rozenburg and then sail to Maasluis. We drove by carriage to Delft, said goodbye to each other there and I took the barge to The Hague.

Fracture
And that was it. The two young men, who spent more than three months together day and night, probably never saw each other again. And they did not want to, especially after Van Lennep distanced himself from the orthodox Protestant ideas that Van Hogendorp adhered to in 1827. Shortly afterwards, Van Lennep wrote in his diary that D. van Hogendorp (so not Dirk or'my old friend\\\')"(...) to my horror came to live here\\\" . Nevertheless, Van Lennep visits him for a courtesy visit. To his relief, he does not find Van Hogendorp at home.

Dirk van Hogendorp (1797 - 1845)
In 1830, Dirk van Hogendorp became a substitute officer at the court of Amsterdam, after which he became a justice at the Provincial Court of South Holland. He married his first cousin, lady Marianne Catherine van Hogendorp. Until his death, Van Hogendorp remained a supporter of Willem Bilderdijk and the Réveil: an international revival of Reformed thought. Two of his daughters developed into feminists and advocates of women's suffrage. The afterword of"The Summer of 1823\\\" states:"Without his journey on foot in 1823 with Jacob van Lennep, this worrier (Van Hogendorp, ed.) would have been completely forgotten.\\\"

Jacob van Lennep (1802 - 1868)
Van Lennep graduated in law in 1824. In the same year he married lady Henriëtte Roëll. The couple had one daughter and five sons. In 1826 Van Lennep became state attorney. He worked, among other things, to have a water pipeline installed between Bloemendaal and Amsterdam. But Van Lennep is best known for his historical novels, such as "Ferdinand Huyck" from 1840, which is seen as his masterpiece. Marita Mathijsen wrote a biography about this special man:"Jacob van Lennep, an inspired rascal\\\".

You cross the Nieuwe Waterweg with the Veer Maassluis - Rozenburg.
